Mindfulness Training in Schools

Bringing mindfulness training to schools means to make an important human mental skill accessible both for pupils and teachers alike. Mindfulness is about learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, moment by moment, with open-minded curiosity, acceptance and kindness. This helps both to appreciate what is going well and to respond more skilfully in the here and now to life's inevitable challenges.

In the school context mindfulness can help children and young people to enhance wellbeing and learning, because it can help to break the grip of unhelpful mental habits, judgements and impulses, making way for greater calm, and for more helpful, kinder and rational thinking about all aspects of life including school. Studies of school mindfulness programmes provide evidence that they have the potential to improve some pupils’ behaviour, psychological health, and executive functioning, including regulating attention and behaviour. This adresses the United Nations sustainabilty goal 'health and education'. While not yet fully researched, increased wellbeing (Ferrer-i-Carbonell & Gowdy 2007) and mindfulness (Böhme et al. 2018) may also contribute to increased environmentally relevant awareness and commitment as well as future resilience and adaptation capacity (Wamsler et la. 2017) and are thus an essential contribution to the future generations to come.

MindEnvironment currently works with two well established programs. One is Mindfulness in Schools from the UK (www.mindfulnessinschools.org ) with its Paws b program for younger and its .b program for older pupils. The second program we work with originates from the US and was developed by Daniel Rechtschaffen: Mindful Education (www.danielrechtschaffen.com).
